“I think that the conversation has made a lot of progress and are becoming more at the forefront at these national conferences. They are really bringing in this important piece of access and health equity, especially as we push the frontiers of diagnostic and therapeutic and treatment options.”
Over the years, there has been more research conducted on health disparities in clinical care, including patients with epilepsy and newborns that experience infantile spasms. Bringing more awareness to these issues will move the field forward, address additional concerns, and find a solution that provides more accessible care to patients.
Kerri Neville, MD, spoke in a talk about addressing knowledge gaps in early life epilepsy during a symposium at the 2022 American Epilepsy Society Annual Meeting , held December 2 to 6, in Nashville, Tennessee. During the session, she discussed the important aspects of having discussions centered around health disparities and how to think collectively to find solutions.
Neville, pediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the University of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, was interviewed by NeurologyLive® at the meeting to talk discuss is the known disparities in treatment of infantile spasms. She also detailed the most important aspect of care for these patients, as well as the progress being made for moving in the space going forward.
