Top 5 MS Research Articles of 2025

The top 5 most-viewed articles from the International Journal of Multiple Sclerosis Care (IJMSC) for 2025 thus far illustrate the community’s drive to address practical challenges in providing comprehensive care for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). As a collective, the authors center the person with MS and look to move beyond symptom control to improve their overall quality of life. They use real-world data to shift research into practice by investigating a disease-modifying therapy (DMT) via a patient registry; by promoting better DMT management via integration of a clinical pharmacist into the MS care team; by discovering that physical activity guidelines or trial usual-care comparators do not quite translate into experience as they are intended; or by validating a new test to bring biomarker developments into direct patient care.

  1. Wearing-Off Effect Reports in People With Multiple Sclerosis Receiving Ocrelizumab Although DMTs are extensively tested prior to release, what is the patient experience once they become publicly available? This study investigated reports of a wearing-off effect with use of the monoclonal antibody ocrelizumab via spontaneous adverse event (AE) reports in a patient program database. Given variability in reported frequency, would this Canadian cohort endorse the AE and, if it did, would it affect treatment continuation?
  2. Integrating Clinical Pharmacy Services Into Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Care Teams: A Narrative Review of 4 Models As DMTs are a large part of MS comprehensive care and the everyday lives of people with MS, including a clinical pharmacist on the care team offers the opportunity to enhance DMT access, adherence, and safe use. The 4 models presented here showcase streamlined pharmacy services with the end goal of enhanced quality of life for patients and improved focus for other team members.
  3. Physical Activity in Multiple Sclerosis: Real-World Data From Saskatchewan, Canada Although approved in 2013, how much have physical activity guidelines for MS been integrated into the lives of people with MS? This team studied levels of activity over 7 years via reports from participants in a government-supported MS drug program in Saskatchewan, Canada.
  4. Designing Well-Being Intervention Trials for People With Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: The Importance of Understanding Usual Care Comparators Work to improve the wellness and well-being of people with MS occurs across the world. This paper by collaborators from 8 countries explores the difficulty of defining usual care across health care systems.
  5. Proteomic Biomarker Panel for Gauging Multiple Sclerosis Disease Activity: A Case Series From Real-World Use Biomarkers are the talk of MS research, but how do we bring them into the clinic? This paper provides a case series demonstrating the clinical validity of a test that tracks 18 biomarkers with the hopes of improving how disease activity can be monitored.
