Garey H. Noritz, MD: We talked a little bit about how you practice in a tertiary medical center with a big team. Some of the patients with SMA [spinal muscular atrophy] are going to be taken care of by neurologists in the community who don’t do a lot of neuromuscular medicine. What advice would you have for them?

Diana Castro, MD: We try to be the experts in SMA in general. I think we’re a very good, open community, and we try to offer help. If you are a general neurologist who is treating one of these patients, always try to communicate with us from the other centers because it’s beneficial to have that connection. For example, if a research opportunity comes, the hospital that is going to get that research opportunity is going to be the center of referral—the tertiary care. It’s good to have that relationship with the person who is handling more patients. I think that’s the most important part of everything.
