“What I've learned over time is that information is power. It's given me confidence and the more information that I have, the more I'm equipped with understanding how to move forward, especially when it comes to treatment options.”

Multiple sclerosis (MS) remains a chronic, immune-mediated disease with heterogeneous clinical presentations and long-term impacts on physical, emotional, and social functioning. As disease-modifying therapies have expanded over the past 2 decades, treatment decision-making has increasingly emphasized shared decision-making, alignment with patient lifestyle and preferences, and attention to both clinical outcomes and quality of life. Understanding the lived experience of individuals with MS can provide clinicians with additional context when discussing treatment options, adherence, and long-term disease management with their patients.

At the 2026 Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) Annual Meeting, held May 27-29, Charlotte, North Carolina, actress Jamie Lynn Sigler, who has lived with relapsing MS for approximately 25 years, shared her perspective on navigating diagnosis, treatment, and evolving self-advocacy. Diagnosed at age 20, she described the initial fear and uncertainty she experienced, as well as her early inclination to avoid information about the disease. Over time, she reported that increased education, open communication with her MS specialist, and a structured approach to emotional coping helped her feel more empowered in her care and more consistent with treatment, while also reshaping how she views disability, independence, and representation.

In an interview with NeurologyLive®, Sigler discussed how her perspective on MS has evolved over time, emphasizing the importance of patient education, open communication with clinicians, and selecting treatments that support long-term adherence. Sigler, most known for her role as Meadow in The Sopranos, also reflected on the emotional challenges of living with MS, shared her approach to navigating them, and described her journey toward openly embracing her diagnosis while advocating for greater awareness and authentic representation of the disease.

Jamie Lynn Sigler is a paid spokesperson for Novartis.
