"Clinician educators are vital to the future of neurology, yet they often face barriers to recognition and career advancement. We need clear frameworks that value and support their contributions."
The 2025 AUPN Annual Meeting will take place on Saturday, September 13th at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, just ahead of the American Neurological Association’s 150th Annual Meeting. Some of the highlights of the meeting include an opening keynote address by NINDS leadership, plus professional development workshops on topics such as residency simulation, dual-career household dynamics, holistic applicant review, and fostering early-career physician-scientists.
Following a networking breakfast, the conference kicks off with a Neurology.Educators.Advancing.Teaching (N.E.A.T) workshop, featuring several prominent clinicians discussing ways to enrich the teaching faculty experience. Among them include moderators Tracey A. Milligan, MD and Roy Strowd, MD; as well as speakers Tamara Kaplan, MD; Galina Gheihman, MD; Erick Tarula, MD; Neil Masangkay, MD; and Marie Carl Eugene, DO.
Kaplan, vice chair of education for the department of neurology at Mass General, sat down with NeurologyLive® in the weeks leading up to the meeting to give insights on her presentation, centered around a framework for supporting clinician educators. Drawing on her work at Harvard Medical School, she discussed 5 key areas identified by her task force–community of practice, professional development, respect and recognition, promotion, and compensation. Above all, she outlined the educational benefits attendees may gain from sitting in on the session, and some practical solutions to help neurologists teaching at all career levels.
