"I'm really happy that the MDA has taken the initiative to talk about this. I think it's a really important conversation to have about navigating the frustrating and difficult process of insurance denials and claims."

At the 2026 Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Clinical & Scientific Conference, held March 9-11, in Orlando, Florida, speakers in a neurology-focused session addressed operational and administrative considerations in neuromuscular care. Presentations included “Institutional and Procurement Considerations”, presented by Crystal Proud, MD; “Strategic Guide to Insurance Denials”, presented by Omer A. Abdul Hamid, MD; and “The Business of Genetics in NMD”, presented by Jordan Bontrager, MS, CGC.1 The session highlighted institutional planning, payer navigation, and the evolving role of genetics services in neuromuscular disease management.

During the Conference, NeurologyLive® spoke with Hamid, a neuromuscular neurologist at Nemours Children's Hospital in Florida, who discussed the complexities clinicians encounter when navigating insurance authorization and denial processes for emerging neuromuscular therapies. He highlighted the importance of understanding patient eligibility criteria, payer coverage policies, and the procedural steps involved in prior authorizations, denials, and appeals, including peer-to-peer reviews and the preparation of letters of medical necessity.

In the interview, Hamid also noted that institutions are increasingly recognizing the administrative burden associated with these processes and are adopting multidisciplinary approaches to support clinicians. These efforts may include the use of dedicated personnel to manage prior authorization requests and appeals. According to Hamid, once structured workflows are established and staff become familiar with payer terminology and procedures, the process may become more streamlined, which can help facilitate patient access to newly available therapies.
