Stroke Prevention Strategies, Patient Communication, and Shared Decision Making

Clinicians explain secondary stroke prevention by tailoring education, addressing risk factors, and choosing affordable antithrombotic plans through shared decision-making to boost adherence.

This episode, titled “Stroke Prevention Strategies, Patient Communication, and Shared Decision Making,” led by the moderator, Dr Ashkan Shoamanesh, and other stroke specialists examined the following critical questions:

  1. Which topics should be covered when discussing secondary stroke prevention with patients?
    1. How important is it discuss underlying stroke etiology to prevent recurrence?

Stroke prevention counseling is framed around stroke etiology, since treatment plans differ for causes like atrial fibrillation versus carotid stenosis. Clinicians use the stroke event as a teachable moment to review modifiable risk factors (e.g., smoking, blood pressure, diabetes), emphasizing that recurrence risk can be substantially reduced with behavior change and appropriate antithrombotic therapy. They tailor explanations to each patient’s health literacy, simplifying complex concepts, using visuals (like brain imaging) when helpful, and setting achievable goals through shared decision making. Practices also rely on plain-language education materials and careful attention to cost and access so that medications and procedures are realistically sustainable for patients.

In the next episode, “AHA Recommendations for Secondary Stroke Prevention,” panelists will continue their discussion on secondary stroke prevention.
